Carnival

23 February 2017

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00am, repeating indefinitely

Carnival also has a special place in our festival calendar from 23rd february to 1st March. According to tradition, the Thursday begins with the great ‘mariol.los’ (people disguised with old, mixed and funny clothes) competition, in which young and old alike let their imagination run wild to try to win one of the six competition categories (float, adult group, school group, residents’ association, adult costume and children’s costume). The tradition is to dress up in any old clothing rooted out of the attic to disguise yourself beyond recognition and then walk through the streets in that guise.

On Carnival Sunday, the various groups add colour and surprise everyone with new, ingenious costumes. Once the parade is over, the festivities continue with music and dance. On Sunday and Tuesday, the focus is on the youngest members of the family, who can enjoy a show by a children’s entertainment group and a puppet show, among other activities. To round off the Carnival, the traditional ‘Sardine Burial’ takes place, at which one can treat one’s palate to local sardines and wine before bidding farewell to the naughtiest party of the year.

Apart from the activities mentioned above, every year the festival programme features a set of new activities with the aim of satisfying the broadest possible audience.
