The Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa (MACE) has launched a pioneering accessibility system for deaf people in its facilities. The initiative has been carried out in collaboration with the Federation of Deaf People of the Balearic Islands (FSIB).
The ‘sign-guide’ system provides a visit to the museum with explanations from its director, Elena Ruiz, about various works, interpreted in sign language, both Spanish and in the international sign system, providing a subjective nuance to make art a posibility for everyone. This system, which can be accessed via mobile phone with a QR code, has been designed by Magdalena Provensal, sign language interpreter for the FSIB in Ibiza.
“When we talk about accessibility, we all think of architectural barriers, but there are other types of barriers. Deaf people encounter communication barriers daily, and that is why a sign-guide has been implemented, to provide independence, access to information, culture, history… for all resident and non-resident deaf people on the island of Ibiza”, explained the director of MACE.
The system is designed so that it can also be used by people without hearing problems, since it has voice and subtitles to facilitate that everyone can enjoy art.
