The traditional fruit and vegetable market
With its Greek pavilion like shape, the Mercat Vell stands in front of the Portal de Ses Taules, the main access point to the walls, right in the heart of the Barrio de la Marina. It stands in the centre of the Plaça de la Constitució, where the peasants arriving from the country would gather to offer their fruit and vegetables in the olden days.
Currently, this little market hosts many stands with the same type of product. The building was constructed in 1873 by Jaume Riera, one of the island’s developers. It is surrounded by terraces, shops and cafés and there is always a great atmosphere around it throughout the whole year.
